The Devon and Cornwall Association was started in 1947 by a government initiative to improve the standard of thatching throughout the counties. This is still a none profit association that seeks to ensure all work carried out by it's members is of the highest standard.
Members meet four times a year to discuss thatching issues such as latest Building Regulations, fire prevention and quality of materials. We also hold thatching demonstrations to promote our craft at events such as the Devon County Show.
The Association upholds rigorous standards and specifications to ensure thatch owners can employ any member with complete confidence.
How we become members
Applications to gain entry to the Master Thatchers Association can only be accepted after a prospective members work has been scrutinised by a three man inspection committee. The committee inspect three completed roofs and full a re-thatch in progress. In addition to the applicant meeting the highest possible standard of craftsmanship they must also have the highest standard of business ethics.
The findings of the committee are then discussed at the next meeting to see if the applicant has reached the required standard of a Master Thatcher.
The Association has to the right to remove any member that falls below the highest standard that has been set.
